Sell Your Clothes For Cash

Once I got it in my head that I would be living in a van, even before buying the van, I immediately knew that I had to start downsizing. I began selling some of my old clothes that are in good shape but that I no longer wear. After following my 4 easy steps to downsizing, I had TONS of clothes that I was ready to part from!

There are a bunch of apps and in person places to sell your clothes for cash now-a-days. So I took the liberty to go through each and every one of them so you don’t have to! Here are all of the places to sell your clothes for cash and why I do or do not like them:

Poshmark:

This is a fan favorite, however it is not mine.

Pros

  • Cheap fees: Poshmark takes a flat rate of $2.95 for sales under $15, and takes a fee of 20% for sales above $15.

Cons:

  • Time Consuming: This app, much like instagram needs you to be very involved in order to do well. If you interact with other accounts and repost their “closet,” you will get more traction and more people buying your clothes. If you are not active, no one will see you.

  • Not Very User Friendly: Although it is very possible to learn, for my liking, there are too many buttons and options. Frankly, I get overwhelmed.

  • Photo Cropping: On Poshmark, all of the photos you take must be cropped to a square. Now, there is a prettyy good chance the camera that you are using to take the photo is a rectangle. What ends up happening for me is it cuts off the top or bottom of the clothing item.. EVERY TIME! It reminds me of the old instagram.. Kinda antiquated in my opinion.

  • You could be selling your clothes for no fees: Yes, the fees are relatively cheap, but you could always be making 100% profit on your clothes.

You take your own photos and deal with customers yourself. It’s not a drop-off-your-clothes type of a deal. You have to put the work in if you really want to sell your clothes.

Curtsy:

I love curtsy! I can sit and shop on curtsy for forever, which in turn makes it more fun to sell on!

Pros:

  • Cheap Fees: The fee that Curtsy takes is very similar to Poshmarks. Curtsy takes a flat rate of $3 for sales under $15, and takes a fee of 20% for sales above $15.

  • User Friendly: It is easy to find your messages and communicate with buyers or other sellers. There aren’t too many buttons to confuse you. Overall, the app seems more modern and has a cleaner look to it.

  • Photo Cropping: You can post your clothes in rectangle form! It may not seem like the biggest deal, but it definitely makes it easier to take the photo, and you have less dead space on each photo.

Cons:

  • You could be selling your clothes for no fees: Again, the fees are relatively cheap, but you could always be making 100% profit on your clothes.

  • You take your own photos and deal with customers yourself. You have to put the work in if you really want to sell your clothes and it can be a bit time consuming.

  • To Get $10 off your first Curtsy order use code KAYLAB34 at checkout!

Facebook Marketplace:

I think Facebook Marketplace is a hidden gem! You can find literally ANYTHING there!

Pros:

  • No Fees: You choose how much you want to sell your clothes and you keep 100% of the profit!

  • User Friendly: Take your photos, upload the images with a short description and you’re good to go! On Facebook Marketplace you don’t need to interact with other users to get more seen, it’s a one-and-done deal.

  • Renew Listing: If your listing has been up for a while and it is getting no traction. With the click of a button it will go back to the top again.

  • Photo Cropping: Users who are scrolling over the marketplace will see your photo in square form so make sure to keep most of your product in that main square, however, once they click on the product they will see it in its original crop.

  • Facebook Groups: If you are selling on Facebook Marketplace, make sure to be a part of groups. If you do not want to ship your products, join garage sale groups in your area! If you are selling just women clothing, join a group that is for women looking to buy cheaper clothing! There is a group for everything on Facebook. Once you are part of a group, you can post your products not only on the marketplace but to each specific group!

Cons:

  • Personal Meet-Ups: Make sure when you sell anything online that you are staying as safe as possible. This not only means wearing a mask at every trade off but also meeting up at a public area to sell your items any time that it is possible. My favorite place to do trade offs is in a parking lot of a gas station or shopping center.

  • You take your own photos and deal with customers yourself. You have to put the work in if you really want to sell your clothes and it can be a bit time consuming.

thredUP:

This is perfect if you like the more hands-off approach!

Pros:

  • Easy Selling: All you need to do on thredUP is order a bag to your home, fill it up with your clothes and send it back to them. That’s it! They will then take photos of the clothes themselves and sell it on their website.

Cons:

Little Profit: Because they are doing most of the work, you aren’t getting much profit. You get 5 to 80 percent of the anticipated selling price. (The more valuable the item, the higher your percentage.)

Buffalo Exchange:

I have mixed feelings about Buffalo Exchange. Here’s why.

Pros:

  • Easy Selling: Fill up your bag, drop it off at your nearest buffalo exchange, and that’s it! Superr simple!

Cons:

  • They Don’t Accept All Your Clothes: The employees at Buffalo Exchange know what will sell and what won’t. They have very specific styles and clothes that they like. So, don’t go there expecting all of your clothes to magically disappear.

  • Little Profit: Their business runs on you bringing your clothes and them selling it for a higher profit then what they give you. Go in expecting cheap prices. Also, know that they give you more money if you chose to use store credit then if they give you money in cash.

  • There May Not Be One In Your Area: Buffalo Exchange can be found in these states - Arizona, California, District of Columbia, Georgia, Illinois, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri, Nevada, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Washington
